Let's talk about tires. Sad to say tires are among the more overlooked and underrepresented maintenance items on today's vehicles. But, basic tire maintenance can increase the life expectancy of hires and improve the performance of the vehicle in general. When it comes to tire care, there are a few things you should be aware of.

Tire pressure is a measure of amount of air in the tires in pounds per square inch. Properly inflated tires will maximize braking, handling, and ride comfort. When tire pressure is too high - not enough of the tire surface contacts the road decreasing grip and reducing brake performance. Over inflated tires will also cause excessive bounce and noisier ride.

Low tire pressure results in increased rolling resistance and a corresponding reduction in fuel mileage. Low pressure also causes increased heat which can lead to tread separation and serious safety deficiencies. Tires are particularly vulnerable at high speeds and will skid longer on wet surfaces when under inflated.

Temperature Sensitive
As outside air temperature drops so will tire pressure. Every 10-degree drop in temperature can reduce tire pressure by one pound per square inch, so the change of season and fluctuations in temperature should prompt pressure testing and adjustment. it is best to check and adjust tire pressure when the tires are cold as the heat caused by use will result in inaccurate readings. Tire pressure monitoring sensors have been mandated in all new cars and trucks as of 2008.

Be sure to refer to your owners manual for tire inflation specifications. Note: Tire pressure from front to rear can vary.

Timely tire rotation is also an important component to maximize performance and life expectancy. Tires wear unevenly for a number of reasons including the high weight and braking requirements for front wheel drive vehicles that cause the front tires to wear at nearly twice the rate of the rear tires. Manufacturers recommend tire rotation in accordance with the vehicle and its intended use.
